Elemental Diet

An Elemental Diet is something practitioners often use to help get rid of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO but it can be used for any GI Dysfunction. It can be used for patients who do not digest or absorb nutrients from food. If you have Chrohn’s disease or your GI tract just isn’t working right. This product may help you.

I should say before we go any further that I paid for my own product and I am not affiliated in any way with this company or their products. I chose to go on this diet for three days so that I could better support the patients in the clinic I work at and be of better service to my personal clients. Personally, I would not use this product with out supervision so do not buy this on your own and use it. Make sure you are working with a qualified practitioner first.

This particular elemental formula is formulated to be as easy to digest as possible while giving your body all the nutrients you need. Integrative Therapeutics Physicians’ Elemental Diet™, Elemental Diet for GI Dysfunction is the product I chose to use based on the recommendation of the Functional Nutritionist Dietician at the clinic where I am a Health Coach. The product tastes like vanilla frosting and frankly was a bit too sweet for my liking but I am getting used to it.

The Dietician at the clinic I work at figured out exactly what my caloric needs would be for a day and told me exactly how much I would need for my height (5'10") and weight (163 pounds). This worked out to 12 scoops a day in 4-8 ounces of water.

Day 1

I was excited and nervous to try this out. I wondered if I could really drink this stuff for three days with nothing else. I wondered if I would be able to be around food without wanting so badly that I snuck a bite or two of something. I almost caved a couple of times due to really low blood sugar and feeling really hungry and had a vision of me shoving all the food I could find in my mouth. I persevered though and did not cave.

When I got up in the morning I made my first glass. The directions on the bag say to drink within 15-60 minutes so I made one scoop with about 6 ounces of water. It was thick and sweet. I was immediately concerned that it might be too sweet for my body to handle since I really don’t tolerate sugar well. The doctor at the clinic was also concerned with yeast overgrowth since I am battling a bit of Candida overgrowth so we decided to combat that with some herbs and extra caprylic acid throughout the day. Doing that seemed to help, I think.

One glass down and I am feeling good, thinking this will be no problem at all. Two hours later I make another glass with one scoop and feel fine. About 30 minutes later I am starving and I have to have another glass with another scoop and know I won’t make it another couple hours so I quickly make another scoop and take it with me when I leave the house for a couple of hours. I left the house at 11:30 having only had 4 scoops of formula and by 1:30 I was shaky and dealing with some brain fog. I had to cut my trip out short to come home and drink some more formula. The next four hours just felt a bit like torture if I am being honest. I was starving and not feeling like I could really do much but sit around without using too much energy and feeling more starving.

Out of desperation I added about 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides) to the formula for the last two drinks of the day. I also got smart and drank two scoops at a time about every 2 hours to keep from feeling starving. That worked much better. The MCT oil can cause very loose stools if your body is not used to having it in larger amounts. Needless to say, I was in the bathroom for about an hour at 11pm. I got a good clean out and felt a bit unwell so I went to bed and slept through the night. I slept well but woke up with a headache which I assume is due to either dehydration or detoxification or a combination of both. Either way, I survived day one and if you ever have to do it, you will too. This diet is no joke.

Have you done a diet like this before or are you being prescribed one? Tell me in the comments. Let's talk about it.
